INDICATORS

YEAR of the FIRE MONKEY 4714
(Native Yang Metal) Imaginative/Clever/Playful
"Charged: curious, capable, funny, adaptable, intelligent, resourceful, innovative, playful, imaginative, responsive and heals fast.

Deplete: manipulative, deceptive, unfocused, cunning, erratic, crafty, frantic, nervous, compulsive, anxious and possibly criminal.

Image: The Monkey talked about in Chinese Astrology is well known to the Chinese peasant as a god. The Tibetan and Zhou people both have fables of a Monkey ancestor. The most famous Monkey in China is the wily Monkey who aids a monk in bringing the Buddhist sutras from India. All the images portray the Monkey as godlike but with the weaknesses commonly associated with humans (desire). This is the perilous balancing act that gives us an understanding of the Monkey character. Poised between the profound and the mundane, Monkeys are capable of a broad awareness of their environment. Nothing is left to convention. For Monkeys the greatest danger is selfish fantasy, the evil sister of visionary wisdom. Monkeys fluctuate between materialism and austerity. Material possessions must not block a Monkey’s need for flexibility.

Fire Monkey (1836, 1896, 1956, 2016, 2076) ‘Mountain Monkey’
Fire Monkey’s are organized, industrious and frank characters. They have strong sexual energy and work on their appearance. They are late to settle down. Their fortunes are good (though their motivation may be inspired by escaping hardship) and they are successful in business. They are particularly capable of avoiding negativity, but they will unfortunately need this skill. Though vigorous they are susceptible to wind disorders and may have coronary problems."

LUNAR MONTH: YIN METAL RABBIT
"Metal Rabbits are intelligent, quiet and humble characters. They are social, quick-witted and generous to those in need. They thrive in intimacy with a select inner-circle, but are otherwise aloof. Though their own fortune is modest, they enjoy the company of social and religious leaders. They enjoy spiritual practices and study, but struggle with their application. They do not have strong constitutions and are susceptible to cold illness with pain symptoms. They die from accidental injuries.LM Notes

QI NODE: 4 Spring Equinox
Yin and Yang Equality
"At the Spring Equinox the yin and yang are equal. A quivering Yang arises and a shaky Yin submits. The day and night are equal in length. This qi node marks one of four annual pivots that rectify the annual qi. In lunar calendar terms this is spring's midpoint. A Prince is crowned. During this qi node the best qi is available around dawn; you should practice neigong facing due east and greet the dawn. Imagine that you inhale the true and pure yang of the sun from over the horizon as the light appears. Have it enter your body and refresh all your organs, channels and joints.
You will notice that all the winter's lethargy is gone and if you have been cultivating spring, yang is no longer shaky. Plans and actions are enhanced. It is an ideal time for in depth study, long walks and consulting with diviners and astrologers. Focus and go forward. Do not forget the advice of sages! Crows and ravens are sun-creatures in Chinese tradition - they will be rascally now all through spring and summer."
LM The Way of Three Treasures

LUNAR HEXAGRAM 35 Jin: Advance
“Sometimes success, promotion and advance simply occur due to fate (one's time has come). In this sort of situation the protocol of gratitude and decorum demonstrate the highest form of culture and civilization.

"Jin is not about the prize, or what you did to win it; but about the expressions of grace in the face of good fortune. This grace demonstrates itself in humility and generosity. Cultivating oneself (caring for the ancestral shrine) makes one ready for the gifts of fate. The truth is, nothing is accomplished without a network of co-factors and helpers (family and friends [alive and dead]). Modesty and grace express our interconnectedness.” LM Changing: Zhouyi

TUESDAY March 29, Yang Metal Dog 21
Hexagram 58 Dui: Pleasuring
Lunar Mansion: The House/Pig
Solar Indicator: Danger

"Generally auspicious and associated with a light-handed approach to things. It is not how you find pleasure, but how you express it that will determine the longevity of you happiness."
Zhouyi: 58 Dui

Relax from any hurt pride of yesterday and do not procrastinate today. Fengshui adjustments, negotiations, contracts, weddings and burials are all auspicious. Sleep if you feel ill.

WEDNESDAY March 30, Yin Metal Pig 22
Hexagram 38 Kui: Incompatible
Lunar Mansion: The Wall/Porcupine
Solar Indicator: Complete

Continue investments in family, business, friends and self-care. Socialize, begin travel and build. And yet, it is also quite possible to pass the day smelling the spring flowers. The mixed auspices of today suggest consulting the oracle for specific advice and otherwise good for small matters.

THURSDAY March 31, Yang Water Rat 23
Hexagram 54 Guimei: A Girl is Married
Lunar Mansion: The Stride/Wolf
Solar Indicator: Harvest

Move about the day with a stroke of caution "plan but not speculate." LM Notes: The Stride

Take in the bird's eye view, welcome incoming resources and let sacrifices open new possibilities. Making repairs and medical treatments are auspicious.

FRIDAY April 1, Yin Water Ox 24
Hexagram Consult the Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Mound/Dog
Solar Indicator: Open

"It is time to build and add on to property (family). It is auspicious to initiate and continue routine business. It is a day for feasting, gatherings and romance. Marriages contracted/performed today produce resourceful and wealthy children. It is an excellent day for assemblies, parties and celebrations. It is inauspicious to enter retreat, practice renunciation or travel alone. Avoid confrontation." LM Notes: The Mound

Consult the oracle for more specific advice.

LUNAR HEXAGRAM 40 Jie: Release
Jie is about the inevitable end of bondage and restraint. Jie is when fate slips you a small knife in your prison supper. You will succeed, by small measures, to be released from bondage to freedom, from illness to health. Comply with the divine omens (foxes, arrows and hawks), avoid presumption and freedom will come. The release is not due to your own skillfulness. You may discover that self-liberation offers practical lessons in leadership.” LM Changing: Zhouyi

SATURDAY March 26, Yin Fire Goat 18
Hexagram 26 Da Chu: Great Store
Lunar Mansion: The The Maiden/Bat
Solar Indicator: Settle

Tame your moodiness today, tend to your posse and goals. Notice how your home, work and travel is cross pollinating. Enjoy the arts, stay close to home and keep it light.

"Express success through reasonable conservation, generous sharing and celebration of culture and art."

TUESDAY March 22, Yin Water Rabbit 14
Hexagram 34 Da Zhuang: Great Strength
Lunar Mansion: The Tail/Tiger
Solar Indicator: Design

Be sure to sleep well, into this morning and perhaps a nap midday. Follow the guidance of a partner or mentor.

"The wise use great strength with great caution, because they know it is costly (great injury). In general, the authors of the Zhouyi give great strength no value, unless it is paired with wisdom.
However, it is also observed that even the weak, when in a desperate situation, naturally possess great strength and can have a successful result. This kind of great strength should not be confused with belligerence or mere violence."
Zhouyi: 34 Da Zhuang

Invest in what offers support during hard times. "Bury the dead and educate the young on this day."
LM Notes: The Tail

WEDNESDAY March 23, Yang Wood Dragon 15
Hexagram Consult the Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Basket/Leopard
Solar Indicator: Divide

Consult the oracle for specific advice, shed inessentials and take flight.

"It is auspicious to marry, work hard, purchase, build and remodel (new door =  new resources) on this day. It is auspicious to continue your routine work, review and reinvest. Acquiring wealth (work, invest and collecting debts) is highlighted. Good for burials, memorials and funerals (rain of blessings from the ancestors). Contraindicated activity: Laziness, gossip and slander."
LM Notes: The Basket

Get a good night's rest.

THURSDAY March 24, Yin Wood Snake 16
Hexagram 9 Xiao Xu: Minor Force
Lunar Mansion: The Ladle/Griffon
Solar Indicator: Full

"Small projects well done will eventually add up to success. Obstacles and delays can be expected in any forward action."
Zhouyi: 9 Xiao Xu

"Practice and disciplined cultivation bring confidence."
LM Notes: Full

FRIDAY March 25, Yang Fire Horse 17
Hexagram 5 Xu: Waiting
Lunar Mansion: The Oxboy/Ox
Solar Indicator: Level

"Sensitivity to the auspices of the time (when to wai, when to move) provides opportunity to do great things. It is favorable to deliberately delay or wait. Success, in the case of Xu is also a narrow escape from calamity."
Zhouyi: 5 Xu

"It is auspicious to stay home, guard resources, meditate and focus. It is auspicious to initiate austerity, enter retreat, recover and economize." LM Notes: The Oxboy

Consider the clutch for the entire weekend, it's that kind of a weekend.

In this case, the shell of winter has now cracked open and new movement is possible. It is a good day to honor the ancestors and make fengshui adjustments. Knock down the dilapidated fence. Consult oracles, be straight forward and sincere.

QI NODE: 3 Insect Stirs
Yang Rises
"Insect Stirs is a time of 'awakened movement'. The cold ground softens. Insects awaken from their hibernation. The heat rises up from below and cool wind descends from Heaven. Wind has the subtle freshness of spring but no great or abiding force. The hibernation of dragons ends. In winter dragons (the symbol of spring) are locked in frozen alpine lakes. Their stirring cracks the ice and causes thunder and lightning. The world is startled. Rivers and creeks swell.

Below the surface of Earth the insects stir - wake from their hibernation. In this qi node the insects do not reproduce, develop or burst out of the ground - they only stir. The union of Heaven and Earth is an occasional temperate wind - invisible and inconsistent.

During this qi node qi is best in the hours around dawn. One should practice neigong facing the rising sun. Do not exert yourself, but let the neiqi wiggle and play - this renews us and gives us longevity. Be creative, follow your instincts in neigong.

There is a slightly mischievous quality to the qi of insect stirs. When the baby reaches for the stove, one has to admire curiosity, but curtail enthusiasm."

INDICATORS:

WEDNESDAY
March 16, Yin Fire Rooster 8
Hexagram 8 Bi: Alliance
Lunar Mansion: The Chariot/Earthworm
Solar Indicator: Destroy

Hone in on what needs to be released: make room for what's coming.

"Trusted alliances with like-minded people enlarge one's influence and power naturally without swelling one's responsibilities."
LM Changing: Zhouyi

"Great success comes to anyone who initiates and continues industry. Business booms, all prosper. Building and remodeling go well (bring prestige). Marriages will inspire both partners to be their best and they will produce brilliant offspring. Funerals, memorials and burials will allow the dead true peace (and produce scholar off-spring). Contraindicated activity: It is very unfavorable to procrastinate and/or postpone."
LM The Chariot

THURSDAY March 17, Yang Earth Dog 9
Hexagram 23 Bo: Erosion
Lunar Mansion: The Horn/Crocodile
Solar Indicator: Danger

"The qi is fresh and unformed and therefore should not be pressed into fixation (slavery)."
LM Notes: The Horn

Initiations occur easily today, when patience and adaptation are used. Let your sense of independence guide your timing, there are pockets of defeat today. Be generous and elegant, relax, or your grudges will get the best of you.

LUNAR HEXAGRAM 34 Da Zhuang: Great Strength
“The wise use great strength with great caution, because they know it is costly (great injury). In general, the authors of the Zhouyi give great strength no value, unless it is paired with wisdom.

"However, it is also observed that even the weak, when in a desperate situation, naturally possess great strength - the will to survive. The force or instinct to survive has great strength and can have a successful result. This kind of great strength should not be confused with belligerence or mere violence.” LM Changing: Zhouyi

MONDAY March 14, Yin Wood Goat 6
Hexagram Consult the Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Bow/Deer
Solar Indicator: Settle

"Unity with others is a wonderful feeling. Cui describes a ritual that bares our collective spirit to its Source (ancestors) in a festive ritual that is devoid of hypocrisy and artifice. The gathering identifies our spiritual roots - our commonality. This feeling of unity is the source of all true human emotions."
LM Changing: Zhouyi

"Holding back on this day is related to deeper self-reflection, education of all sorts and consulting with experts and elders - rather than forward action. It is not about mature reluctance or cowardice but about shedding inessentials."
LM Notes: Divide

And so that I can catch up with this Fire Monkey, I lean to my friend Scott Zook,
fellow Almanac Astrology Student:

"Tuesday, the 15th of March, 2016
Fire Monkey day in a Metal Rabbit moon in a Fire Monkey year (2/7)
Lunar Lodge: The Wings/Serpent
Solar Index: Maintain
Without some measure of stillness, self-reflection or humility from yesterday, the vigorously outward directed Qi of today could bring a cascading series of troubles. While it's true we might well wake up to find all the deck chairs aren't exactly where we left them, we may also be gripped by a compulsive suspicion that an iceberg will be hammering us at any moment, even in the middle of the Pacific. Hyperactive minds and passionate visions take the floor but obsessive imaginations could leave us feeling exposed, anxious and wanting to dO something about it. Bravery is one thing but the need for preemptive strikes is another. Without checking in and getting some guidance with natural customs, loyalty or even conventions being proactive could stir up a nest of vipers. Overt rebellion or escape brings retribution.
However, today is quite excellent for brilliantly creative improvisational solutions to seemingly insurmountable situations but our courage in this is only capable of leadership if we're not trying to create the conditions we're looking to remedy. The inspiration for the spontaneity we use becomes a new tradition only through discipline and generosity. Collaborate. Let go of selfish myopia, dynamically turn toward the policies and practices of inclusion and custom, and feel the honor of tribal federation. That said, be methodical, vigilant and watchful of the protocols and alchemical power dynamics of our environment. If we can stay still enough we will observe more than we can imagine and be given the delightful window to narrowly escape calamity by noT acting. Stalk ourselves through our risky stimulations. Track all the relative movements of our concern but refrain from shaking the tree just yet. Having a watchful eye to the subtle adjustments of a constantly shifting environmental protocol is a kind of dynamic divination. Collect intelligence for the rebellion without defaulting on commitments. Today would be a great day to go dancing or play music with your tribe..."

TUESDAY March 8, Yin Earth Ox 30
Hexagram 52 Gen: Still
Lunar Mansion: The Beak/Monkey

Be gentle and open hearted today, though that may feel like a struggle.

"It bodes well to follow superiors, practice austerity and/or pool resources with others. It is a good day to sincerely comply with divination and maintain taboos meticulously.

"It is inauspicious to push forward, be industrious or initiate new ventures. Revolution or demanding idealistic justice on this day will be catastrophic."

Hexagram 15 Qian: Modesty
Lunar Mansion: The Trio/Gibbon
Solar Indicator: Shut

"With true modesty anything can be accomplished. In modest steps a great journey can be accomplished. Even when strong action needs to be taken, do not abandon modesty."
LM Changing: Zhouyi

"It bodes well to dispose of inessentials (haircuts), edit, fast, study (Classics), take exams, enter retreat and practice meditation. It is good to be industrious close to home (house clean). Initiating business (particularly group enterprise) will be fruitful if planning has been thorough.

"It is inauspicious to push forward aggressively. Do not get married, finalize divorce, bury the dead (it will create family dissent), spend savings or speculate financially as these all lead to losing resources and cooperation."
LM Notes: The Trio

THURSDAY March 10, Yin Metal Rabbit 2
Hexagram 12 Pi: Obstruction
Lunar Mansion: The Well/Tapir
Solar Indicator: Design

Keep it close to home.

"It is auspicious to build, remodel, do fengshui adjustments, take exams, and maintain routine industry. It is favorable for medical treatments (particularly for initiating a series of treatments for a chronic condition.)

Chinese Almanac Astrology March 5 - 6, 2016

In honor of Liu Ming, my teacher

CHINESE ALMANAC ASTROLOGY

LUNAR MONTH: YANG METAL TIGER
"Metal Tigers are demanding, candid and vigorous characters. They are contentious, aggressive, sensual and yet forgiving. They are generous to temples and to their friends. To avoid anxiety they do not hide their feelings or thoughts, but regret it later. When young they are wasteful and their fortune is limited and obstructed but as they age it consistently improves without reversal. They are physically strong and more likely to be injured than ill. They are susceptible to pernicious wind when depressed." LM Notes

LUNAR HEXAGRAM 4 Meng: Immaturity
“What is unformed has great potential but is also lacks clarity - so success, even progress, is difficult. Is is unfavorable for those who are anxious and impulsive...Meng is often divined when you are obsessed and anxious about something.”

SATURDAY March 5, Yang Fire Dog 27
Hexagram Consult the Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Stomach/Pheasant
Solar Indicator: Danger
"/it is auspicious to build, bury the dead and marry on this day. It is a good day to make your case, to push forward and to ask for what you are du (collecting receivables). It is a good day for gift giving and charity (canceling debts owed to you).
It is inauspicious to be confrontational, break the law or squander resources (gamble); such activities will bring years of loss and regret."
LM Notes: The Stomach
Consult the oracle and simplify with your focus today. Get exercise throughout the day.

SUNDAY March 6, Yin Fire Pig 28
Hexagram 52 Jian: Gliding
Lunar Mansion: The Watchers/Cock
Solar Indicator: Complete
"Good fortune comes to those who are patient and persevering. Expect a long journey with a happy and fulfilling ending."
LM Changing: Zhouyi

Let the simplification of yesterday settle in today. Retreat, postpone, "enjoy what is already manifest." LM Notes: Complete

*** For those interested, Wednesday March 9 is the first day of Yin Metal Rabbit month.
Any anecdotes to share about this Metal Tiger month in a Fire Monkey year? Wow.
