Chinese Almanac Astrology June 27 -30, 2019

In honor of my Teacher, Liu Ming,

I offer the following:
CHINESE ALMANAC ASTROLOGY

To support grace and ease / For the resolution of all beings

Commentary and compilations by Jamie Shulander
All notes from class notes/works by Liu Ming

... ... ...

INDICATORS Listed:
Yearly, Monthly, Lunar then Daily

::: ::: :::    =    Change

... ... ...

INDICATORS - The pattern components that continuously rotate per year, month, daily, lunar or solar phase. The indicators below articulate the current alignment.

LUNAR YEAR: YEAR of the BOAR
"Charged: plain speaking, caring, sensuous, compromising, eloquent, tolerant, humanitarian, reliable, unselfish, funny, hard-working, lucky and gregarious.

Deplete: self-indulgent, indulgent, oversexed, luxury loving, flamboyant, secretive, long-suffering, gullible and self destructive.

Image: The Chinese character for home includes the character for this Pig. Needless to say in Chinese astrology, Pigs are the most domestic of signs. A modest sacrificial animal since ancient times, it has become a mainstay of the Chinese diet - considered a ‘great transformer,’ able to make garbage into sweet white meat. In parts of China a family’s wealth is measured in the number of Pigs one owns. The wild boar mother is considered one of the fiercest animals alive. The mother boar will attack a Tiger seeking its young without an interest in surviving - the ultimate expression of aggression. Pigs collect material objects and derive great sustenance from them. They see stuff as art/food."

YIN EARTH BOAR (1899, 1959, 2019, 2079) ‘Monastery Pig’
Earth Boars are sensual, lethargic and aimless characters. They are hard to teach and hold very strong opinions. Their previous causes are strong but may support a hardened view of life. Attractive and popular socially they cannot maintain committed relationships (overly protective then cold). Those closest to them often become their worst enemies. Their material fortunes are however good and they live in comfort and luxury. Though they appear healthy they are plagued by chronic dampness."

LUNAR MONTH: YANG METAL HORSE (1870, 1930, 1990, 2050) “ Horse in the Stall”
Metal Horses are active and talkative but not successful in completing projects. They are likeable but often offend others with their blunt and unsophisticated speech. Their fortune is uneven and their sense of themselves is often conflicted and full of struggle. They are well loved by family members, despite their characters and will often find protection from their uneven fate in family or friends. Staying home brings good fortune - travel is risky. They have weak immunity and are especially susceptible to viral and sexually transmitted diseases.

QI NODE: 10 Summer Solstice
Yang Rules
"At Summer Solstice there is the longest day (yang) and the shortest night (Yin) of the year. The sun is at its zenith, directly above us at noon. It is the Yang peak of the year. Activity is highly motivated. Summer Solstice is one of four annual pivots that rectify annual qi.

"The Yang growth, that began in spring, peaks and turns towards its inevitable decline. Flowers blossom and many fruits and vegetables ripen but this explosion of splendor is a gesture of survival (launching seeds). The force of Yang, if not tempered, will destroy rather than ripen. The Chinese character for summer depicts a farmer at rest (idle) - growth in this part of summer needs no nursing. Yang is raging on its own.

"During this qi node the environmental qi is best at Noon. When you wake, practice neigong facing due south. Do not overexert yourself; but sweating is not harmful. Chew well. During the day eat two or three small meals, rest (nap) after lunch, drink green and chrysanthemum tea and in the evening enjoy a light soup. Guard the heart from strain by expressing your feelings, singing, dancing and socializing. Before bed bucket bathes with a final cold rinse. Go to sleep just after dark. Rest, relax, travel (vacation by sea or high mountain), exercise modestly and do not get burned by the sun. Do not work or rest directly in the sun of midday!"
LM The Way of Three Treasures

::: ::: :::

37 Jia Ren: Household
Jia Ren is about well-ordered, supportive families and family-like groups that have a collective purpose. Selfless caregivers (mothers/nourishment) make households and family-like groups strong. Selfless and consistent inner strength is the basis of true communities. Orderly family/communities nurture great leaders who, in turn, make the alliances that create fair and just nation-states."
LM Changing: Zhouyi

::: ::: :::

THURSDAY June 27, Yin Wood Goat 25
Hexagram 17 Sui: Pursuit
Lunar Mansion: The Well / Tapir
Solar Indicator: Divide

“In this hexagram, the source of clarity and the strength that bring true success is subordination to fate - the act of following. When your efforts are rewarded it is stopping that brings success. Getting caught up in pursuit for its own sake will make you mad and diminish your resources."
LM Changing: Zhouyi: 17 Sui

“It is auspicious to build, remodel, do fengshui adjustments, take exams, and maintain routine industry. The earth can be dug (gardening = wealth) and it is a good day to donate, buy or sell (investment) real estate. Community or charity projects will flourish. It is favorable for apologies. It is favorable for medical treatments (particularly for initiating a series of treatments for a chronic condition).
“It is not auspicious to postpone needed repairs, apologies or difficult tasks. It is not good for funerals or burials of those who died by suicide, violence or sudden illness because others will soon follow.”
LM Notes: The Well

"Holding back on this day is related to deeper self-reflection, education of all sorts and consulting with experts and elders - rather than forward action. It is not about immature reluctance or cowardice but about shedding inessentials."
LM Notes: Divide

FRIDAY June 28, Yang Fire Monkey 26
Hexagram 25 Wu Wang: No Expectations
Lunar Mansion: The Ghost / Sheep
Solar Indicator: Full

“Relax plans, open up and let go of goals. When Wu Wang is divined, good fortune is based on being free of fear and expectation but ready to act if an easy opportunity arises. Do not over focus on goals and gains and you can avoid disaster. Just let things happen naturally."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 25 Wu Wang

“It is not auspicious for worldly industry of any kind. It is a bad day to go to war (many casualties) or get married (husband will die early). One should avoid the wilderness (possession/illness will result).”
LM Notes: The Ghost

“This is an optimum day for education, preparation, polishing, gathering resources and firming up plans. Confidence grows as the right time and necessary resources are now part of the vision. The qi is forming patterns and remaining in the channels. Practice and disciplined cultivation bring confidence. The prince (yang) is gaining support. Discipline in small matters succeeds. True confidence requires no aggression. Though nothing needs to be done, the natural maturation of strength occurs.”
LM Notes: Full

SATURDAY June 29, Yin Fire Roosters 27
Hexagram 36 Mingyi: Pheasant Call
Lunar Mansion: The Willow / Roebuck
Solar Indicator: Level

“When integrity demands action, be cautious and prepared to fail. The situation is unfavorable because, the clear warnings of doom are being ignored by the powerful."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 36 Mingyi

“It is especially auspicious for seclusion and the composing of memorials. It is favorable to make offerings and practice divination. It is fruitful on this day to fast, enter retreat, practice meditation and receive spiritual initiation and/or ordination (lineage). It is ideal for funerals / burials and the complete resolution of the unsettled dead (exorcism).
“It is not auspicious for marriage. Do not indulge in lawsuits (as it will ruin 3 generations).”
LM Notes: The Willow

“This is a day when stable readiness and the qi of confidence blooms into activity. Youthful anxiety and ambition are replaced by personal strength and confidence. From this position all things look and are possible. Educated choices are easily acted upon. Others join you to enlarge the success of activity. The prince (yang) is mature, if inexperienced, but ready to act independently of his mother (yin). Pleasure is the outcome of disciplined practice. Yang qi’s previously renegade quality is matured, integrated and dominant.”
LM Notes: Level

SUNDAY June 30, Yang Earth Dog 28
Hexagram 22 Bi: Ornament
Lunar Mansion: The Birdstar / Horse
Solar Indicator: Settle

"Bi is favorable when appearances match the inner nature of things. Simplicity, rather than extravagance, is recommended as the aesthetic of confidence. Beware of the deception that comes from superficial decoration."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 22 Bi: Ornament

“Think powerful, but gentle succeeds...It is auspicious for building and routine work (you will meet / hobnob with the powerful). Good auspice is directly related to continuity, convention and not innovation.
“It is not auspicious for funerals/burials or marriages (rape, divorce). It is a dangerous day for travel and/or medical treatments.”
LM Notes: The Birdstar

“Preparedness makes action timely and successful. Tradition, convention, training, education - all forms of readiness, inspire action. Forces join together and new alliances produce unexpected results. Action taken with such thorough preparation is bound to succeed. The qi of the day is stable, progressive and functional. Clarity and calm (yin) are not unseated by action (yang). Focus and repetition succeed. Procrastination and equivocation is contraindicated.”
LM Notes: Settle

48 Jing: The Well
"Jing is about the natural reciprocity in the human relationship to nature. The Zhouyi says that the unevenness of nature (well) mirrors the unevenness of our conduct. If we act inappropriately we ruin our resources (dry well). In the Zhouyi nature is not an almighty god that stands in judgement of us, meting out punishment for our wrongs. Nature is a dialog. ”
LM Changing: Zhouyi  48 Jing

::: ::: :::

SUNDAY June 23, Yin Metal Rabbit 21
Hexagram 42 Yi: Incease
Lunar Mansion: The Watchers / Cock
Solar Indicator: Harvest

Yi is about the natural progress of things when it is enhanced by the best of conditions. Sun and water and good soil help the tree grow strong; yet a tree is also subordinate to the warmth, the rain and the soil. The tree also naturally "knows” what to take and leave. Yi is the “knowledge” of nature.”
LM Changing: Zhouyi 42 Yi

“It is auspicious to stay home (familiar places / people), study, enter retreat, initiate austerities and make offerings to the dead. It is wise to postpone everything proactive (marriage, building, funeral, burials).
“It is not auspicious to be industrious in any way (building will bring loss). All positive events that occur today will ultimately have negative results (marriage will end in disloyalty and divorce). Medical treatments on this day will complicate existing illness - turn acute into chronic (possibly bring on premature death). Confrontation or battle on this day will lead to injury or death.”
LM Notes: The Watchers

“What makes this day smooth is a sense of fearlessness. It is not so much how it goes (yang) as what it shows (yin). Rise and fall are no longer the point - the wide view can be taken. Ease is possible - effortless continuity on all sides. The qi seems to float us forward quite naturally - ebbing and flowing are both acceptable. The lessons of earthly life are found in both maturing and declining. Everything succeeds. Cleverness and survival give way to courage and directness. Be like the beloved monarch and not an ambitious merchant. Let new resources and assistants come forward by standing back.”
LM Notes: Harvest

MONDAY June 24, Yang Water Dragon 22
Hexagram Consult the Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Net / Crow
Solar Indicator: Open

"To consult a physician and consult oracles (divination of all kinds) will bring clarity. It is a good day for industry (labor/gardening = long term wealth), building (restores clarity) and burying the dead (enhance intuition). It is inauspicious to take anything for granted. It is inauspicious for revolution, confrontation, breaking taboos, neglecting responsibilities or travel (someone at home dies/gets sick)."
LM Notes: The Net

“The choice here is whether to call fate something to fight or something to embrace. It is a day with an easy qi. It is a day to appreciate how things really operate beyond the desire that creates images and appearances. Accepting should be a boundless (yin) act beyond goals - the goal has always been return to our beginningless origin (Dao). There is no protagonist (yang) that should relax - there is only relaxation itself (yin). Look around for a successor (new plan, idea, task) and resume the heart/mind of a novice. The son of a rebel leader may become the second emperor of a new dynasty. An open heart gives the option to acquire great wisdom.”
LM Notes: Open

TUESDAY June 25, Yin Water Snake 23
Hexagram 51 Zhen: Thunder
Lunar Mansion: The Beak / Monkey
Solar Indicator: Shut

"Zhen indicates a time for a dramatic breakthrough from lethargy. Good fortune here has everything to do with staying calm. Zhen denotes a situation where, though things are in turmoil at first, they sort out and become beneficial in the long run. Whether you are the rebel leader or the deposed ruler there is good reason to proceed with standard protocol, good manners, and determination.”
LM Changing: Zhouyi  51 Zhen

"It bodes well to follow superiors, practice austerity and/or pool resources with others. It is a good day to sincerely comply with divination and maintain taboos meticulously.
"It is inauspicious to push forward, be industrious or initiate new ventures. Revolution or demanding idealistic justice on this day will be catastrophic."
LM Notes: The Beak

“A Shut day is a day of rest, whether you like it or not...It is ideal day for retreat, mediation and severing ties with everything - don’t worry, it is not the end of anything! Let go anyway - feel the freedom and inaction, disconnectedness, because it offers limitless insight. Focus on your golf swing and forget about how the kids are squandering their inheritance on cocaine. It’s that kind of day! The river has reached the sea and even the water is confused.”
LM Notes: Shut

WEDNESDAY June 26, Yang Wood Horse 24
Hexagram 21 Shihe: Biting
Lunar Mansion: The Trio / Gibbon
Solar Indicator: Design

"A Zhou leader was both a warrior and a sage, not a brute. Good leaders know that it is their own miscalculations and poor management that lead to the need for a strong use of force (war). When we resort to harsh punishments we must do so cautiously - even humbly."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 21 Shihe

"It bodes well to dispose of inessentials (haircuts), edit, fast, study (Classics), take exams, enter retreat and practice meditation. It is good to be industrious close to home (house clean). Initiating business (particularly group enterprise) will be fruitful if planning has been thorough.
"It is inauspicious to push forward aggressively. Do not get married, finalize divorce, bury the dead (it will create family dissent), spend savings or speculate financially as these all lead to losing resources and cooperation."
LM Notes: The Trio

“It is an excellent day to recover wisdom by stepping back, planning, recalling alliances and reassessing our position.”
LM Notes: Design

YIN EARTH BOAR (1899, 1959, 2019, 2079) ‘Monastery Pig’
Earth Boars are sensual, lethargic and aimless characters. They are hard to teach and hold very strong opinions. Their previous causes are strong but may support a hardened view of life. Attractive and popular socially they cannot maintain committed relationships (overly protective then cold). Those closest to them often become their worst enemies.

QI NODE: 9 Grain Ripens
Yang Matures
"Grain is both a seed and a food. When grain ripens (develops its beard) food stores are renewed and the seeds for next year are also secured. Grain Ripens qi node is a time for first grain harvests. Food that will be harvested in autumn can also now be planted. Yang becomes a new Father and awkwardly rejoices. The Prince becomes worthy of the legacy of power. New alliances are made and old alliances confirmed - confidence spreads widely. The sun’s warmth transforms the damp of spring rain. The name Grain Ripens refers to the maturation of grain/seeds when yin and yang unite in the plant.
“The sudden burst of growth however, has a dark side. As hot qi breaks away from spring wind it may enter the Lungs (skin) too quickly (allergies and fevers). Sudden temper tantrums unseat the hun shake the shen. The heart is opened up and vulnerable - defensiveness lashes out. Emotional outburst in summer release stagnant qi but can also damage the shen/heart. Insomnia may occur or get worse. All our tissues and cells are meant to flourish (expand) at this time so it is important to maintain a good appetite (and diet). Breakfast is very important.
“Accidents and injuries occur often. Be careful.
“During this qi node qi is best at / near noon. In the morning practice neigong facing south. Do not exert yourself; let the neiqi (inner energy) cool the blood and transform nutrients. Rub your stomach in circles. During the day eat two modest meals, drink green tea and in the evening eat a very light supper Enjoy light savory (salty) soups. Guard the heart.
“Before bed bucket bathe, wash your hair and go to sleep early. Sleeping in until 7am is okay. Work, travel, rehearse - don’t dream. Planning is over - fulfill promises. Be active, not ‘aggressive’. Cultivate the summer qi by going places and doing things. Multi-task is okay. Show and express your feelings but do not overdo your expression. Don’t plan piano lessons; rehearse for a recital (coming soon). Chew well, drink to satisfy thirst (not more) exercise outdoors if possible, go for a walk and/or do some gardening."
LM The Way of Three Treasures

LUNAR HEXAGRAM: 31 Xian: To Be Moved
“In all situations where slow-growing, inspired feelings are found, things go well. You may act confidently as inspiration takes shape and develops to fruition....When Xian is divined, we could say, that our feelings and our body are reliable tools of divination. A surge of inspiration is being felt...The growth of influence and inspiration described by Xian is at first calm with awe, then stirred up by enthusiasm and, finally, confident enough to act. Though the progress is gradual, patient and intuitive - success is inevitable. The fullness of success is in the discovery of the natural reciprocity and support of a partner or a group. This qi sensation is deeply moving and difficult or impossible to put into words. Do not expect words to express such deep connection; let inspiration radiate from your actions.”
LM Changing: Zhouyi 31 Xian

::: ::: :::

WEDNESDAY June 19, Yin Fire Pig 17
Hexagram 44 Gou: Meeting
Lunar Mansion: The Wall / Porcupine
Solar Indicator: Maintain

Today has mixed auspices. And today's character is resolute, talented and aggressive, potentially a pipe bomb where relationships are concerned or supportive in business.

“Inauspicious for all intimate personal relationships. It is a time to withdraw and cut your losses. Both sexes are at risk to be abused by the inappropriateness of a relationship. Think rot and ruin. A kind of corruption has entered the very foundation of things.”
LM Changing: Zhouyi 44 Guo

"It is auspicious to build, remodel and make fengshui adjustments (increase opportunities/wealth [public part of home]). It is auspicious to initiate business, sign contracts and get married (strengthen family ties). It is auspicious for investments, banking (gardening [increase fertility]) and study (the classics). It is an especially good day to exercise (martial arts), socialize (create parties, feasts and celebrations). It is also advantageous to travel, start a journey or vacation. NOT complying with the auspice of this indicator may lead to madness and suicide.
"Contraindicated activity: It is inauspicious to withdraw, begin an austerity or retreat."
LM Notes: The Wall

“Spontaneous action and inspiration (yang) become the new tradition (yin). Qi assertion (yang) is repeated again and again to hold and harden gains (yin). Establishing a new state is the focus. The qi of practice and the drilling of troops is awesome. Allies appear from all quarters. True majesty succeeds without pressing forward. Today success breeds more success and everyone may be included in the new victories. Generosity is a prophylactic to decline - giving is a sign of strength and cements alliances. It is the sun at noon.”
LM Notes: Maintain

THURSDAY June 20, Yang Earth Rat 18
Hexagram 24 Fu: Return
Lunar Mansion: The Stride / Wolf
Solar Indicator: Destroy

Today's clever and thrifty character is a nice fit for the auspices suitable for tending foundations and making calculated adjustments.

“Short-term plans succeed in the context of a broad view. Things are turning for the better. Routine work comes to fruition. It is favorable to have a clear goal before setting out."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 24 Fu

"It is auspicious to build, remodel or repair property (line clothing for winter) - in the sense to fortify or strengthen. It is auspicious to transact routine business, banking (anything that parallels the storing for winter), to plan but not speculate. It is beneficial to receive medical treatments (qi in channels) It is favorable to make amulets.
"It is inauspicious to travel, argue or press lawsuits. It is not advised to dig the ground or bury the dead."
LM Notes: The Stride

“The successful prince as warrior must now lose his youthful ambitions and develop into a proper king….Today calculated loss (cancellation) succeeds”
LM Notes: Destroy

FRIDAY June 21, Yin Earth Ox 19
Hexagram 27 Yi: Jaws
Lunar Mansion: The Mound / Dog
Solar Indicator: Danger

Today's active, stubborn and highly motivated is also fairly well suited to a day best for routine and continuity. Be elegant and generous, growth is possible in modest ways...

“Raw impulse is strong but dangerous. Excessive ambitions can bring about personal disaster. There will be setbacks in progress. Acting properly when the time is right goes well. In the acquisition of what you want (money or property) it is important to be strong but modest."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 27 Yi

"It is time to build (thresholds, public buildings) and add on (growth of family: new baby, new bride) to property. It is auspicious to initiate and continue routine business. It is a day for feasting, gatherings and romance. Marriages contracted/performed today produce resourceful and wealthy children. It is an excellent day for assemblies, parties and celebrations.
“This day brings fresh breezes in Spring, cooling mist in Summer, light rain in Fall and thin ice in Winter. It is inauspicious to enter retreat, practice renunciation or travel alone. Avoid confrontation."
LM Notes: The Mound

“To roust hypocrisy in his new alliances the leader must bait his hidden enemies (yin) by showing vulnerability. This day is a qi expression of true power but all the action is fraught with danger and risk. The games of political power are also the precursors of decline. The power plays show yin to be drawing life from the heart of yang. Success is limited now to a kind of survival. Manipulation and covert action succeed. Elegance becomes the mask of cleverness and intrigue. Doing only what needs to be done is best. Old habits or patterns of pressing forward will invite catastrophe. Beware grudges.”
LM Notes: Danger

SATURDAY June 22, Yang Metal Tiger 20
Hexagram 3 Zhun: Sprouting
Lunar Mansion: The Stomach / Pheasant
Solar Indicator: Complete

Today's character is a bit feisty, demanding, candid and vigorous, and only partially suitable. Be cat like and observe, be curious and jump when you know it will work, not to prove a point. Otherwise, chilling out is also a great option.

Zhun is favorable for young people, fresh thinking, new alliances, and gentle progress. Zhun is an inspired, delicate and new situation needing unpretentious leadership and experienced advice to grow. When Zhun is divined inexperience is the basis for difficulties, there are no real outside obstacles. Delays should be expected."

LM Changing: Zhouyi 3 Zhun

"It is auspicious to build, bury the dead (increase status/rank) and marry (your children will hobnob with kings) on this day. It is a good day to make your case, to push forward and to ask for what you are due (collecting receivables). It is a good day for gift giving and charity (canceling debts owed you)."
“Contraindicated activity: It is inauspicious to be confrontational, break the law or squander resources (gamble); such activities will bring years of loss and regret.”
LM Notes: The Stomach

“It is a day for resting on your laurels. Success is established and secured and the new state seems to govern itself. Enemies are few.
