LUNAR YEAR: YEAR of the RAT
"Charged: Charming, diligent, perseverant, methodical, social, cooperative, discrete, frugal and observant. Rats are capable and fun loving.
Depleted: Complaining, nervous, nit picking, annoyingly analytical, stingy, scheming, cowardly, overly concentrated (mono-maniacal) and selfish.
Image: The Rat talked about in Chinese Astrology is well known to all Chinese farmers throughout history. If there is grain, rats appear, so rats are linked to prosperity. A rat year is expected to be profitable. Rats always appear in groups and, though not individually strong, they can undermine an enormous barn by gnawing and nibbling away the foundation piece by piece. Rats often view their social life as central to their existence. Sociability is required to survive. Their acute social observation makes them good mimics or actors. When they are being someone else (acting) they love center stage. Though not a sensual materialist, like the Pig, rats are hoarders and often live in clutter. They are likely to become more capable as they age..."
YANG METAL RAT (1840, 1900, 1960, 2020, 2080) ‘Rafter Rat’
Metal Rats are sensitive, meticulous and resourceful. They easily win the attention and support of others and love to compete and win. Their ambition is modified by a strong personal sense of moral and spiritual values. They enjoy independence and are ruthlessly calculating in matters of the heart and finance. Though not without enemies, they experience relatively even fortunes. Jovial in appearance they internally brood and worry over the slightest things. They are susceptible to contagious and common illnesses but live long because of treatments from expert physicians and meticulous personal habits."
LUNAR MONTH: YANG EARTH TIGER (1818, 1878, 1938, 1998, 2058) ‘Mountain Tiger’
Earth Tigers are obstinate, emotional and cavalier characters. Their youth goes badly and makes them homeless wanderers. This wandering makes them excellent planners or cons and tricksters. Their unique fortunes rest on the fact that they actually benefit from harming others (strange karma debts to collect). They have awesome energy and physical strength that can only be made sick by powerful spells and/or demons.
QI NODE: 24 Great Cold
Malignant Yin
"The Great Cold qi node is Big Yin's last stand for the year - 'Cold rolls up into Heaven'. The fact is Yin power is nearly exhausted. It is the systole of yin/yang transformation - a pause and stillness before the stirring of spring and the return of Yang. It is time to remain withdrawn and silent. Cold and Damp unite and ride the Wind. The Cold is ghostly and hollow but still dangerous and penetrating.
"During this qi node Great Cold qi is best at 2 am. One should practice neigong in the evening before bed and just before dawn facing the northeast. Do not exert yourself, but let the yang qi stir - feel warm. During the day eat two small meals. Is is still the dead of winter so do not abandon the conservation of your yang qi. Rest often and throughout the day and work indoors. Do not think too much.
"During this time the Great Yin of winter is fallen - a cold Damp (pernicious qi) spreads, along the ground. Go to bed early and avoid the cold night winds that harm the lungs. Your genetic predisposition for illness and death (ghosts) are on the surface (abroad) and can be adjusted, cleared or subdued. Heavy phlegm and cold diarrhea that do not respond to treatment are dangerous signs of possession. Stay warm. Stimulating massage is okay but should not stir up yang. Warm baths and brushing the skin red are good.
"The groundless feeling of depression, fear and 'just surviving' are common symptoms of malignant yin. The unsettled dead cause outbursts of emotion (possession/fear) that hurt the Lungs and Colon - try to stay calm, but not lethargic. Strange and/or profound dreams are good signs of the transformation and resolution of ghosts."

LUNAR HEXAGRAM: 62 Xiao Guo: Small Succeeds
"Success in small
matters. The judicious and timely use of small force succeeds. Being an
assistant is favorable. Things go well if you avoid pretense."

SUNDAY February 2, Yin Wood Pig 9
Hexagram 64 Weiji: Not
Yet Across
Lunar Mansion: The
Watchers / Cock
Solar Indicator: Open
"Expect to be
unfulfilled at first and then later satisfied. The old has not quite turned
into the new...Good for waiting and preparation, education and growth. Bad
for pressing forward, conflict, lawsuits, examinations, and travel."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 64
Weiji
“It is auspicious to
stay home (familiar places / people), study, enter retreat, initiate
austerities and make offerings to the dead. It is wise to postpone everything
proactive (marriage, building, funeral, burials).
“It is not auspicious to
be industrious in any way (building will bring loss). All positive events that
occur today will ultimately have negative results (marriage will end in
disloyalty and divorce). Medical treatments on this day will complicate
existing illness - turn acute into chronic (possibly bring on premature death).
Confrontation or battle on this day will lead to injury or death.”
LM Notes: The Watchers
“The choice here is
whether to call fate something to fight or something to embrace. It is a day
with an easy qi. It is a day to appreciate how things really operate beyond the
desire that creates images and appearances. Accepting should be a boundless
(yin) act beyond goals - the goal has always been return to our beginningless
origin (Dao). There is no protagonist (yang) that should relax - there is only
relaxation itself (yin). Look around for a successor (new plan, idea, task) and
resume the heart/mind of a novice. The son of a rebel leader may become the second
emperor of a new dynasty. An open heart gives the option to acquire great
wisdom.”

MONDAY February 3, Yang Fire Rat 10
Hexagram 40 Jie: Release
Lunar Mansion: The
Net / Crow
Solar Indicator: Shut
Today's character is aggressive, excitable and brave. The auspices suggest that going with the flow and routine
action will make the best use of the day...
“...Nowhere to go means
you have no particular goal or purpose because the freedom to choose is new.
You can let things come and go, that is just let them open up by themselves.
After every period of restraint there is a release (southwest). Inhibition naturally
thaws like ice in the spring.”
LM Changing: Zhouyi 40 Jie
"To consult a
physician and consult oracles (divination of all kinds) will bring clarity. It
is a good day for industry (labor/gardening = long term wealth), building
(restores clarity) and burying the dead (enhance intuition). It is inauspicious
to take anything for granted. It is inauspicious for revolution, confrontation,
breaking taboos, neglecting responsibilities or travel (someone at home
dies/gets sick)."
LM Notes: The Net
“A Shut day is a day of
rest, whether you like it or not. Qi resources are spent and the notion of a
spender (yang) is long gone. Dispersion has ended in exhaustion (big yin) and
no memory exists to create joy or negativity. Struggling to act on such a day
borrows qi from fantasy and sets up a ghostly pattern of bad qi credit. What’s
it like to float down the river with no boat, no river and no protagonist? It
is ideal day for retreat, mediation and severing ties with everything - don’t
worry, it is not the end of anything! Let go anyway - feel the freedom and
inaction, disconnectedness, because it offers limitless insight. Focus on your
golf swing and forget about how the kids are squandering their inheritance on
cocaine. It’s that kind of day! The river has reached the sea and even the
water is confused.”

QI NODE: 1 Spring Begins
Yang Reverses Yin
"Though Spring
Begins means the return of yang qi it is really mostly theoretical. We feel
that Yin is done, but Yang is still only active 'under the surface'. The
overall trend has shifted towards Yang but it may not be accompanied by much
apparent change, like warm weather or increased stamina. The first new moon
begins the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). Spring Festival, celebrated for
the 2 weeks of this qi node, in China is like Christmas, New Year, Fourth of
July and everyone's birthday all rolled into one. Everyone celebrates and is
very generous and sociable to encourage spring to grow. This is the gan ying
principle. It is a celebration of yang renewal.
"During this qi
node qi is best at 3am. One should practice neigong just before dawn facing -
northeast. Do not exert yourself, but let the yang qi play - this renews us and
gives us longevity. During the day eat several small meals with family and
friends. Renew relationships.
"Acts of renewal
and generosity are auspicious and rewarding. Avoid being very productive and do
not sign agreements.
"With the beginning
of spring the Liver/hun 'comes alive'. In the early nodes of spring dreams can
be very revealing of our physical and spiritual condition and the state of our
ancestors. As the ghosts (yin) of winter fade into the background the
beneficent ancestors (yang) come forward. Spring qi has a kind of hope in it -
we dream both day and night during this time. Though our qi resources are not yet
solid, it is very auspicious to being cultivating new and renewable projects.
The caution is important - if we move too fast the weak underpinnings of spring
yang collapse. If impulse accepts education all goes well."

TUESDAY February 4, Yin Fire Ox 11
Hexagram Consult the
Oracle
Lunar Mansion: The Beak
/ Monkey
Solar Indicator: Shut
Though today's character is assertive, focused and oafish, it may be best to hang back and go for the community
approach...
Read through the Spring Begins Qi
Node several times these next couple of weeks, and take heed.
"It bodes well to
follow superiors, practice austerity and/or pool resources with others. It is a
good day to sincerely comply with divination and maintain taboos meticulously.
"It is inauspicious
to push forward, be industrious or initiate new ventures. Revolution or
demanding idealistic justice on this day will be catastrophic."

WEDNESDAY February 5, Yang Earth Tiger 12
Hexagram 59 Huan:
Overflowing
Lunar Mansion: The Trio
/ Gibbon
Solar Indicator: Design
A most excellent day to reassess,
make edits and release...when in doubt keep calm, today's Earth Tiger may
otherwise aim for the dramatic: obstinate, emotional and cavalier.
"Huan is
generally favorable and associated with getting rid of the old and bringing in
the new. It is the refreshment that comes from deep and honest spiritual
revelation."
LM Changing: Zhouyi 59 Huan
"It bodes well to
dispose of inessentials (haircuts), edit, fast, study (Classics), take exams,
enter retreat and practice meditation. It is good to be industrious close to
home (house clean). Initiating business (particularly group enterprise) will be
fruitful if planning has been thorough.
"It is inauspicious
to push forward aggressively. Do not get married, finalize divorce, bury the
dead (it will create family dissent), spend savings or speculate financially as
these all lead to losing resources and cooperation."
LM Notes: The Trio
“It is an excellent day
to recover wisdom by stepping back, planning, recalling alliances and
reassessing our position.”
